Discover the Splendor of Acanthophyllia - Exquisite Large Polyp Stony Corals!

Unveil the allure of the Acanthophyllia, often hailed as "Desh Coral",  the "Donut" or "Meat Coral" due to its captivating round, single-polyp structure, akin to Scolymia/ Homophyllia or Cynarina. These gems boast a mesmerising array of vibrant colours and patterns, becoming the crown jewel in any collector's treasure trove.

Once an overlooked marvel, today, Acanthophyllia stands as a pinnacle among large polyp stony corals, sought after by enthusiasts worldwide. Their desirability, however, parallels their rarity and the subsequent higher price point in the industry.

Despite their premium value, Acanthophyllia defy the norm by showcasing remarkable hardiness. Unlike sensitive counterparts, these corals adapt to varied tank conditions, displaying resilience to neglect—a stark contrast to high-end Acropora, making them a dependable addition to any reef set-up.

Originating from Indonesia and Australia, these corals flaunt distinctive colourations. Australian specimens exude a mint-chocolate chip allure, while Indonesian varieties showcase captivating reds and blues, with rare rainbow hues commanding top desire among collectors.

The scarcity of Acanthophyllia, coupled with export restrictions in some regions, has contributed to their exclusivity and escalated prices, especially post-regulatory changes in the coral trade.

Notably, these corals lack viable aquaculture methods, hindering mass production. Future advancements in reproduction techniques could revolutionise accessibility, although the intricate nature of their slow growth poses a formidable challenge.

When it comes to care, lighting and placement play pivotal roles. Optimal lighting falls within the 50 to 100 PAR range, with a preference for low to medium intensity.

Striking a balance in water flow is critical, avoiding excessive currents that may damage their delicate flesh. Low to medium flow patterns, ideally variable, foster a nurturing environment for these corals, enabling easy feeding and maintenance.

Feeding these corals offers a fascinating spectacle, with Acanthophyllia eagerly accepting various foods. Their dramatic feeding response turns them into an enchanting seafood feast, relishing LPS pellets, krill, and even larger items like silversides.

Their allure extends beyond mere corals, captivating enthusiasts with their unique feeding behaviors and exceptional colour variations.

At ZeoBoxReef.com.au, we're committed to sourcing the most captivating Acanthophyllia specimens, constantly seeking new color morphs to enrich your collection. Each addition becomes a dilemma, as these exquisite corals often tempt us to keep them as prized showpieces in our own collection.

Looking for the best place to buy corals online in Australia?

At Zeo Box Reef Aquaculture, we pride ourselves on a different approach compared to other aquarium stores in Australia. When we obtain corals, particularly those sourced from the wild, we recognise the stress caused by their extraction from their natural habitats. That's why we handle them with extra attention and care.

Initially, these corals are collected off the reef and kept aboard a vessel, where they remain for a period. During this time, there is a constant flow of seawater over the corals to maintain their well-being. Upon arrival at the collectors facility, they undergo meticulous inspection, cleaning, and, if necessary, resizing, as many of these corals are initially quite large.

After being purchased by retailers, the corals are boxed up and shipped to them. The retailers then transition these corals into their holding tanks for immediate sale. However, by the time these corals reach the customers' tanks, they've endured a significant journey and are typically stressed. That's where our careful process begins.

We take the time to observe the corals, checking for pests and allowing them to settle and adapt to captive conditions. Most importantly, we ensure they're well-fed. It takes about 2 to 4 weeks for us to see positive indicators like good feeding response, healthy polyp extension, vibrant coloration, and overall vitality. Only then do we make these corals available for sale on our site, allowing us to confidently offer our Arrive Alive Guarantee.

It's worth mentioning that we exclusively focus on corals and do not sell any fish, eliminating concerns about fish parasites when purchasing from us. This is what sets us apart – the Zeo Box Reef Difference! Unlike many other retailers who hurriedly advertise new stock upon arrival, we understand that rushing this process often results in a high death rate for the customer. Our commitment lies in ensuring the well-being of the corals and ultimately the success of your aquarium.

HOW WILL MY ORDER BE PACKAGED?

Zeo Box Reef Aquaculture prides itself on being a leader in the industry for packaging and shipping corals. We have a meticulous approach to packaging methods to ensure that your order arrives in optimal condition. Our team carefully hand-picks and packs each order with great care. Coral fragments are placed in specially designed containers and secured using chemically inert foam floats. For larger corals, we use a double-bagging method and add activated carbon to achieve optimal water quality during shipping. To maintain the ideal temperature conditions during transit, we use thick-walled styrofoam boxes with heat/cold packs as needed. Our shipping options include door to door Star Track Premium freight or same day Airport-to-Airport delivery. Both options are fast and secure.

CARE GUIDE & TIPS

LPS corals require less light than many other species. These corals are generally easy to grow and require less demanding maintenance. LPS corals are a great choice for beginner aquarists.

LPS coral typically requires low-to-moderate lighting and flow so place them accordingly in your aquarium. When placing and transporting LPS coral, be mindful of large inflated polyps that are easy to damage.

When working with LPS coral wave some water over the large polyps before moving them so they retract their tissue. Corals like bubble coral and hammer corals should never be removed from the aquarium while the polyps are inflated, because inflated polyps may tear on their own skeleton when removed from the water. Large Polyp Stony Corals benefit from clean water and a consistent source of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium. This can be achieved a number of ways. For small systems we recommend large water changes, larger systems may require supplementation via dosing or a calcium reactor. Consistent stable water parameters is key to keeping corals healthy, please make sure to do your research before you buy as these amazing animals require our full respect and care.
