Caring for LPS Corals in Your Reef Tank

LPS corals, also known as Large Polyp Stony corals, are a popular choice for many reef aquarium hobbyists due to their vivid colors and unique shapes. These corals are a staple in many reef tanks and can provide a beautiful and fascinating addition to your aquarium. However, caring for LPS corals requires a bit of knowledge and effort to ensure that they thrive in your tank.

Lighting

LPS corals require medium to low lighting to survive and thrive in your tank. They require even light spread in order to produce the energy they need to survive. Therefore, it's important to invest in high-quality lighting that provides the necessary light spectrum and intensity for LPS corals. LED lights or T5 lights are good options for providing adequate lighting for LPS corals.

Water Quality.

Water quality is critical for the health of LPS corals in your reef tank. These corals are sensitive to changes in water quality, so it's important to maintain consistent water parameters. This includes temperature, pH, salinity, nitrates, and phosphates. Regular water testing and water changes can help to maintain a stable and healthy environment for your LPS corals. One aspect commonly overlooked is the importance of an ATO (automatic top up) to replace evaporated fresh water from your aquarium as this will affect your salinity levels. A dedicated ATO unit is a must have for any reef aquarium. We like the Tunze range of ATO's here at ZBR

Nutrition

LPS corals also require a balanced diet in order to thrive in your reef tank. These corals feed primarily on microscopic organisms, but they can also benefit from being fed small amounts of food, such as Polyp Labs Reef Roads, TLF Goniopower or phytoplankton. It's important to not overfeed your LPS corals, as excess food can lead to an increase in nitrogenous waste, which can be harmful to your corals and other inhabitants in your tank.

Placement:,

LPS corals require proper placement in your reef tank to ensure that they receive adequate light and water flow. These corals need to be placed near the middle or bottom of the tank where they receive medium to low light and medium to low water flow. This will help to provide them with the nutrients and energy they need to grow and thrive. Additionally, it's important to not place LPS corals too close to other corals of different species, as they may sting each other.

Final Thoughts

Caring for LPS corals in your reef tank requires a bit of effort and knowledge, but the reward of having a thriving and beautiful coral in your aquarium is well worth it. By providing adequate lighting, water quality, nutrition, and placement, you can ensure that your LPS corals will thrive and provide a stunning addition to your reef tank. With proper care and attention, LPS corals can be a long-lasting and fascinating part of your aquarium for years to come.
